Since the other weird holiday we are celebrating is pie day, we really need to bake some pies.
22 Jan 10:45 30 Activities : Apple pies

Puff pastry

Apples

Cinnamon

(Alternative filling for those who won't eat apples or cinnamon possibly)

1.  The first thing to do is cut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 squares – they don’t have to be perfect.

2. Then in the centre of each side of each square make a cut about 3cm long – you’ll need this cut when you want to create your ‘cup’ shape in the next step.

3. Take a muffin tray and lightly spray with non-stick cooking spray.  Then take one of the small squares of pastry and at each cut, overlap the edges – this will bring the sides in and create the cup shape.  Then sit this into one of the muffin divets in the tray.

4. Spoon in the fillings you’re going to use.  For this, we are going to use apple with cinnamon but you can use anything including leftovers or egg and bacon for a breakfast pie.

5. Once all the pie cases are full, you then need to bring each corner together and then pinch them closed.

6. This step is optional but giving them a little brush with a little egg or milk will help the puff pastry brown up beautifully.

7. Then into the oven to cook and crisp up – keep a close eye as they won’t take too long.  I don’t know exactly but it’s usually between 12 and 15 minutes per tray.

Historians trace the pie’s initial origins to the Greeks, who are thought to be the originators of the pastry shell which they made by combining water and flour.

22 Jan 11:20 30 Activities : Which way should I go?

Street map of area around the Hall (4 to 6 copies needed)

List of map symbols

Gold Wolf Cubs need to give directions to the other Cubs using the street map.  They have to get the Cubs from one point of the map to the other.

The other cubs follow the directions on the map and see if they find the place they are meant to

Map symbols - Cubs to guess what each symbol means and write it down.  To give the correct answers afterwards (can use as a Kim's game)

What would it be like to be a popcorn kernal
22 Jan 11:50 5 Game : Popcorn Drama

All players find themselves a spot and squat down. The facilitator talks the group through the exercise.

“Everyone is a piece of corn, the floor is a big pan, and we’re going to make popcorn. — We slowly start heating the pan”… As the pan gets hotter, the corn starts to `pop`.  A player `pops` by jumping up, clapping hands above their head, and saying `pop`. Make sure the `popping` starts gradually, `popping` is a group thing, and in the end, `popping` should stop.

  • Variation: Forget to take the pan off the fireplace, and have the popcorn start burning.
