We are also going to do some parts of the Bird Badge today so lets start with a game
18 Oct 17:35 10 Game : Birds Fly
This is a quick cub game that can be used as a filler or an improvised game.
Akela tells the cubs to flap their arms up and down and run around when he names something that flies.
When he mentions something that doesn't fly, they must hold still.
Those who make a mistake must drop out.
To confuse things, the leader flaps his arms at every command.
The commands should be given in quick succession,
e.g. Hadedas fly, geese fly, pigs fly, dogs fly.

Let's do some of the activities online together for JOTA JOTI

Part of the bird badge is feeding wild birds (and making a bird feeder also counts for the Gold Wolf advancements). It is also a JOTA JOTI Challenge this weekend.

Let's talk about birds - how many do you know?
18 Oct 18:30 15 Activities : Bird Badge

Bird photos

Bird calls

Speaker

Show the Cubs the picture of the birds and see if they can identify

Play the sounds of the bird calls and get them to identify.

Explain that, although we will build a bird feeder, they should be careful about feeding wild birds:

1. Make sure that you remove food that has got wet and is going mouldy

2. Keep it clean

3. Supplement - so don't feed all the time so that the birds become dependent

4. High enough so cats, etc. can't get to the birds

Our last JOTA JOTI challenge is to make a Whale in origami
18 Oct 18:45 10 Crafts : Whale Tails

Blue paper, square

Instructions

  1. Start by making a small introduction of the activity. Share a brief overview of the importance of whales in the marine ecosystem as well as major threats to their survival. (You can find lots of facts about whales by clicking the links below:
    1. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/10-wonderful-whale-facts
    2. https://www.wwf.org.uk/learn/fascinating-facts/top-10-facts-about-whales
    3. https://www.ifaw.org/international/animals/whales
  2. Let’s make our whale origami. Follow the instructions in this video: https://youtu.be/5-HypV5T5jM?si=k3v5xaxLkhZXfEX-
  3. After completing the origami task, ask the participants some questions about whales:
    1. What is the largest species of whale? (Blue whale)
    2. What is echolocation? (Is a technique used by whales and other animals to determine the location of objects using reflected sound. This allows the animals to move around in pitch darkness, so they can navigate, hunt, identify friends and enemies, and avoid obstacles.)
    3. How long can a sperm whale hold its breath underwater? (Up to 2 hours, but the average is around 45 minutes)
    4. What do whales eat? (Depends of the species – baleen whales eat krill and small fish, while toothed whales eat squid and fish)
    5. What are the biggest threats that whales face? (Marine litter and pollution, climate change, ship strikes and commercial whaling)
    6. How do whales communicate with each other? (Whales use sounds like clicks, whistles, and songs to communicate).
