Falling Objects Gravity is what keeps our feet on the ground. It's one thing that affects all people and things equally. In a vacuum, a bowling ball and a feather would fall at exactly the same speed, but because of the Earth’s atmosphere, a heavy bowling ball falls much quicker than a light feather—thanks to gravity. Try this experiment to see if you can see the difference in speed between falling objects and maybe even puzzle out why. Just make sure not to drop any bowling balls on your toes! Materials: 1. Collect a selection of balls and a household object, like a doll or an action figure, that’s approximately the same weight as each of the balls. Then blow up a balloon to be the same size as each ball. If you have a scale, weigh each item and record the weights. 2. Stand on a sturdy chair and have a family member get the stopwatch ready. First, drop a ball and time how long it takes to hit the ground. Then do the same with the appropriate sized balloon and household object. Make sure you’re dropping the items from the same height each time. Maybe to be sure, hold the item at your nose and drop them from there. As you drop each item be sure to record how long it takes for it to land. 3. When complete, examine your results. What did you observe? Did shape, size or weight have an impact on how quickly items reached the ground?
Place three magnets along a metal ruler. (If you’re using a wooden ruler, you can tape the magnets to the top.)
Suspend the ruler from two stacks of blocks, books, or other materials. Be sure the magnets are facing down.
Tie pieces of string to the paper clips Take one paperclip and hold it until it’s just suspended below the first magnet. Tape the string in place onto the table (or whatever surface your activity is on). Do this with the other two paperclips.
After taping the strings in place below the magnets, remove the ruler and observe what happens. All the paperclips fall to the ground! We talked about why the paperclips were not going up into the air after we removed the magnets.
Put the ruler with magnets back above the paperclips. Slowly lift
each paperclip toward each magnet until they are all suspended. |

Ask two Cubs to stand in front of the others. - Ask all the Cubs to look for what is different about the two Cubs that can be seen (visible diversity) - Ask all the Cubs to mention what might be different about the two Cubs that can't be seen (invisible diversity) - Ask all the Cubs to mention what is the same about the two Cubs that can be seen (this is often more difficult, especially if the chosen Cubs are different races, genders. An obvious similarity is that they are both in uniform. This is only visible when they are actually wearing their Cub uniform) - Ask all the Cubs to mention what is the same about the two Cubs that can't be seen. (The SA Constitution prohibits discrimination on any one or more of the following grounds: race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth. This gives some indication of the types of diversity aspects that you would be listening for the Cubs to mention. You can prompt where necessary). Debrief: So, what is diversity? It is the mixture of sameness and difference of each of us. We are not one thing - I am female, a mother, White and speak English - I am not just one thing and in the same way we all have things that are the same and things that are different between us.

Ask the cubs to think of a time when they were left out (excluded) - a friend did invite them to a party, they weren't picked for the sport team, the teacher ignored them in class, mom bought your brother something and not you.... (just think, don't have to tell us) How did it make you feel? Think of the word. Now, go and introduce yourself to as many of the Cubs as possible using that word. (Leader to demonstrate - walk up to someone, shake their hand and say "hi, I'm angry") Let them go around for a while then call the Cubs back. Ask them to tell you the words they heard - write up on board/paper Can then ask them how you behave when you feel like that (eg. if I am angry, I shout...) and write these up next to the words
Ask the Cubs to give you those words and write them up as a second list. Can ask them how you behave when you feel like that (eg. if I am happy, I smile).. write up next to the words Ask the Cubs which Cub Group they would rather be part of. No-one likes being left out. It hurts.. the same as if you have been hit. Ask Cubs what we can do to make sure everyone is included? |

Bubbles versus gravity - can you help keep the bubbles in the air? You'll need to work together | |||||

Have Cubs (1 per Six) blow as many bubbles as they can. Make sure the bubble blowers blow UPWARDS. Then let the rest of the Six blow on the bubbles lightly. The bubbles will fly up, left, right, or down. The point of the game is to see how long each Six can keep the bubbles in the air. Once all the bubbles have blown away let the bubble blowers blow some more (and alternate different Cubs in the Six). |

This is a very simple activity in which the group counts to twenty (or higher) with each player saying their number in turn. Each Cub has to listen to the previous numbers being said and only calls out a number once they are certain it is their turn and they are aware what numbers have already been said. Start by going around the circle clockwise. Once they get the idea, they need to count based on who you point to. Hold a few practice rounds. Hesitation or wrong number means you are out. You move faster and faster as the game progresses until only one person is left. |

This is a very simple but powerful activity aimed at ensuring that all Cubs of the pack are acknowledged and included.
All Cubs stand in a circle. A ball is thrown from one player to the
next with each “thrower” calling out his/her name. The “catcher” catches
the ball and does the same to the person they throw the ball to. Helps Cubs to learn each other's names. In time, you can change it so that the "thrower" says the name of the person they will be throwing to. |
